in the name of god

Where is God? If you had to point to the place where God’s presence is known, his power is real, and his authority is sure, where would it be? If you find yourself even a little unsure, you’re not alone. For many of us, we imagine God to be nearby. But if we’re honest, his presence, power, and authority seem too distant to be real.

If we want God with us, Jesus makes clear what we must do: “Where two or three gather in my name, I am there with them” (Mat 18:20). To bring him near, we’ve got to get together and invoke his name. If you’re no longer content to imagine God is near, then you need us and we need you. Let’s get together in 2022—with Jesus!

for the sake of the name

“God” is not so much a name as it is a job description. To get to know God for who he is, we must get to know him by name. We call him God, Father, Lord, Jesus, and many other names besides. But every name of God calls for a response from us—how will you respond?

secure in the name

When you pray to God, what usually tops your list of prayer requests? For many of us, other requests often take a backseat to the prayer for protection: “Lord, keep us safe.” Jesus prayed for protection for his disciples, too, but not the sort we typically mean.

more to come

Christ grants *his* special presence, power, and authority to *his* people. But these benefits are not for us alone! Christ commissions his people to go in his presence, power, and authority - to others. As we go, we can be assured that he goes with us!

more than one

Christ want to bring us together—for worship, for prayer, and for work. When we’re alone, in our own little worlds, we’re cut off from the special presence, power, and authority Christ longs to give us—together.

what moses never said

When we gather in God’s name, we come into his presence, we see his power, and come under this authority. In this place, we have all we need… until we don’t. Moses learned the hard way what happens when we quench God’s Spirit. You will do well to learn the words Moses never spoke.

the breath of god

To gather in the Name of God is to welcome all that God brings—his presence, his power, and his authority. The last of these three—God’s authority—he also delegates to those he chooses. He breathes his Breath into them and calls them to speak for him.

the fire of god

When God is present, all his goodness comes with him. Like water, God’s goodness flows out of who he is. At the same time, to behold God’s face is to encounter God’s glory. If God’s goodness is like water, his glory is like fire—it changes everything it touches!

the face of god

Nothing on the face of this earth can supply what you will only behold in the face of God. Though no eye can see his face, God does reveal his face—his presence—to the hearts of those who call to him by name. Do you know his name? Will you seek his face?

the name of the lord

God wants back in—back into the world he created, back into the lives of his people. He’s ready to show up: to speak, to move, to work in us and among us. With so many other so-called “gods” running around, we’d better be sure we get his Name right.
